Mmm... the night is long...
The lamp burns low and small
The roads are cold, the windows dim,
No star has broken through the grey.
We count the hours, we hold our breath
For something promised far away —
A hope as old as all our names,
A light we cannot reach today.
So we wait, we wait
In the hush before the light,
Hands held open to the night.
Oh, the waiting sky
Holds its breath for You,
Every door is dark
Till the morning breaks through.
Come, oh come, be near,
Turn the waiting sky to gold,
Let the lonely cold
Release its hold.
A young girl folds her tired hands,
The heaviest hope a heart can hold;
She feels Him move beneath her skin,
A warmth to brave the coming cold.
The straw is dry, the lantern sways,
She hums a song, and waits, consoled.
So we wait, we wait
In the hush before the dawn,
Every shadow holding on.
Oh, the waiting sky
Holds its breath for You,
Every door is dark
Till the morning breaks through.
Come, oh come, be near,
Turn the waiting sky to gold,
Let the lonely cold
Release its hold.
Light is coming —
Low and small —
In a manger —
For us all —
And the dark that held us,
We felt it loosen, felt it break.
Ahh — ahh —
Oh, the waiting sky
Breathes at last for You,
Heaven leaned so close
That the dawn broke through.
Come, You're finally here,
You turned the waiting sky to gold,
And the lonely cold
Released its hold.
The night was long...
But morning came...
Mmm... morning came.
A lamp, a jar of water, evening on the floor...
Mmm, who is standing at my door
The dust still hangs in lamplight, the bread is on the board,
I am only a girl from Nazareth, plain and unadored.
Then the room grew bright as morning though the sun was gone,
And a voice came soft as falling snow — "Do not fear, chosen one."
And my knees, oh my knees forgot to stand,
The water slipped from my open hand —
What is this, what is this trembling in me...
Gabriel's word, falling like light on my face,
"You will carry the holy, you are full of grace."
(Do not be afraid) — but my heart was a drum,
(Do not be afraid) — for the kingdom to come.
Oh, Gabriel's word, and the whole world held its breath,
A girl and an angel, and the death of death.
"How can this be," I whispered, "I have known no man at all?"
"The Spirit will come upon you, the Highest overshadows all.
The cold will turn to candlelight, the silence into song,
And the One the prophets ached for has been awaited so long."
And my knees, oh my knees forgot to stand,
But I lifted up my open hand —
Yes, yes, let it be in me...
Gabriel's word, falling like light on my face,
"You will carry the holy, you are full of grace."
(Do not be afraid) — and my fear became flame,
(Do not be afraid) — I will honor His name.
Oh, Gabriel's word, and the whole world held its breath,
A girl and an angel, and the death of death.
Let it be... (Let it be)
To me... (To me)
According... (According)
To Your word, oh —
Yeah... yeah...
Gabriel's word took root, and it lives in my chest,
The Maker of mountains is now my small guest.
(Holy, holy) — every fiber says yes,
(Holy, holy) — let the lowly be blessed.
Oh, Gabriel's word, and a wonder began,
The breath of the angel, the hope of man.
A lamp, a jar of water, evening on the floor...
And a Yes that opened heaven's door.
A young girl by the window,
Lamp turned low...
Light came soft across the floor,
No bright fire, no open door —
Just a word too big to hold,
Hands that shook, her blood ran cold.
"How can this be mine to keep,
I am small, the night is deep."
And every fear inside her chest
Went quiet at the question...
Will you trust the One who asked,
Will you carry what He blessed?
Yes — let it be so,
Let it be in me.
I don't have the answers,
But faith is all I need.
Let it be so, let it be so,
All my doubt laid low —
I am Yours, whatever comes,
Yes, let it be so.
She touched the place beneath her heart
Where heaven chose to start,
Felt the whole world tilt and sway
On what one trembling girl would say.
Not a queen, not robed in gold —
Just a girl whose yes was bold.
When I'm afraid —
When I can't see —
Greater than my trembling hands,
Greater than the things I planned,
I will open, I will trust,
Let the promise live in us.
Yes — let it be so,
Let it be in me.
I don't have the answers,
But faith is all I need.
Let it be so, let it be so,
All my doubt laid low —
I am Yours, whatever comes,
Yes, let it be so.
A young girl by the window,
Saying yes, and yes, and yes...
Let it be so.
Cold on the road... no light in the window...
Three more miles, and her feet have gone numb,
Dust in her throat, and the night's still to come.
A girl and a carpenter, weary and worn,
Counting the doors of a town not their own.
Mm... so cold...
Knuckle on oak, and a candle inside,
"We have no corner, no bed for the night."
Each door that closes is colder than snow,
She leans on his shoulder and whispers, "Let's go."
No room... no room...
And the weight that she carries is heavier now,
The Lord of all heaven—and no one will bow—
No room, no room, in the inn of the world,
The King of all kindness, a stranger, a stranger.
No room, no room, but a manger of straw
Will cradle the answer to all that we are.
No room... no room... let Him in.
A stable, a lantern, the breath of the cows,
The smell of the hay where the lowliest bow.
She lays down her coat on the hardness of stone—
A palace of dirt for the holiest born.
Here... right here...
If I'd been the keeper of one of those doors,
If mercy came knocking, footsore and poor,
So open the latch of this hardening heart—
Make room, make room, make room...
No room, no room, in the inn of the world,
The King of all kindness, a stranger, a stranger.
No room, no room, but a manger of straw
Will cradle the answer to all that we are.
There was no room...
But love found a way through the cold, through the door...
Make room.
Holy... holy is the night
Before the world hears the cry
No bell is ringing, no lantern is high
Just frost on the doorway and stars hung to dry
A girl bites her lip through the ache and the cold
And time stands so still it forgets to grow old
The straw holds its breath, the oxen go still
A hush rolls like water down over the hill
Holy is the night, holy is the wait
Heaven on a hinge, swinging wide at the gate
Hold the small light, don't you breathe, don't you speak
Holy is the night where the strong meet the weak
Her hands learn his weight like a song finds its key
A king with no crown, just a child on her knee
The lamp-oil is low and the shadows lean near
And somehow the whole of forever is here
Sleep now... (Sleep now)
The dark is so kind (So kind)
Every long midnight was leading to this —
Oh-oh
The night God grew small enough to kiss
Holy is the night, holy is the wait
Heaven on a hinge, swinging wide at the gate
Hold the small light, don't you breathe, don't you speak
Holy is the night where the strong meet the weak
Holy... holy is the night
Sleep, little light
Holy is the night
Hush — can you hear it,
A small cry in the cold?
Heaven leaning close to the world...
There's no gold around this crib,
Just straw and lantern light,
And a mother's tired hands
Holding back the dark tonight.
The cattle breathe their warmth,
The wood gives one slow groan,
And the smallest pair of fingers
Turns this manger to a throne.
And the whole sky holds its breath —
Oh, the whole sky holds its breath...
Born tonight! Love put on skin and bone,
A King with no crown of His own.
Born tonight! The dark could not hold the morning —
Sing it loud, the world is turning,
He is born, He is born tonight!
(Born, born tonight!)
Shepherds drop their staffs and run,
Their lanterns burning low,
Following a strange new star
To the manger's tender glow.
And they kneel down in the dust,
Rough hands and frightened eyes,
To find the answer to their prayers
Is wrapped in cloth, and cries.
And the whole sky holds its breath —
Oh, the whole sky holds its breath...
Born tonight! Love put on skin and bone,
A King with no crown of His own.
Born tonight! The dark could not hold the morning —
Sing it loud, the world is turning,
He is born, He is born tonight!
(Born, born tonight!)
Glory — (Glory!)
In the lowest place — (Lowest place!)
The crib is small but it holds the whole of grace!
Wake up, sleeping world, and lift your face...
Born tonight! Love put on skin and bone,
A King with no crown of His own.
Born tonight! The dark could not hold the morning —
Sing it loud, the world is turning,
He is born, He is born tonight!
(Born, born tonight! Born, born tonight!)
He is born, He is born tonight...
Born tonight.
Cold on the hillside, embers burning low...
We were only watchmen in the snow.
Wool and the wind and a thin grey moon,
A handful of shepherds and one worn tune.
Straw in our mantles, frost on the stone,
Counting the hours, far from home.
Then the dark pressed close... till the dark wore thin.
A seam of light split the open air,
A silver trembling, a holy tear,
The hills held their breath, the sheep stood still—
And the heavens broke over the field.
Glory! Glory in the field!
A child is born and the night is healed!
Glory, glory, the sky is torn,
Run to the manger, the King is born!
Run, oh run, to the light of the morn.
"Fear not," he said, with a voice like rain,
"I bring you joy for a world in pain.
In a stable low where the cattle lie,
A baby cries 'neath a waking sky."
And we dropped our staffs... and we ran, we ran.
The whole sky filled with a thousand wings,
A wall of voices, a host that sings—
We could not stand, we could not kneel—
And the glory poured over the field!
Glory! Glory in the field!
A child is born and the night is healed!
Glory, glory, the sky is torn,
Run to the manger, the King is born!
In the lowest place— (Glory!)
On a mother's face— (Glory!)
In the smallest hand— (Glory!)
Over all the land! (Glory!)
Lift it, lift it, lift it higher,
Carry the news through the cold and fire!
Lift it higher... higher... higher still!
GLORY! Glory in the field!
The earth has found what the heavens sealed!
Glory, glory, the sky is torn,
This is the night the Light is born!
Glory... glory... in the field...
In the field.
(Oh, oh) sing it low, (Oh, oh) let it rise.
A small light breaks the dark tonight,
The straw still warm where mercy lies.
Out past the cold the shepherds run,
They leave their fires for a greater one.
The night that held us holds its breath —
A baby's cry undoing death.
(Mm, He is here, He is here)
So lift your voice from weary ground,
The King the prophets dreamed is found.
(Lift it up, lift it up)
Sing, O heavens, sing it loud —
(Glory, glory!)
Break the silence — wake the crowd —
(Glory, glory!)
Love came down in cloth and clay,
(He is born) — tonight, today!
Sing, O heavens, every star —
He has found us where we are.
The mother's hands, the manger's wood,
The lowly throne where mercy stood.
No crown of gold, no gilded hall —
Just heaven leaning over all.
So lift your voice, you barren night,
The dawn is wrapped in swaddled light.
(Lift it up, lift it up)
Sing, O heavens, sing it loud —
(Glory, glory!)
Break the silence — wake the crowd —
(Glory, glory!)
Love came down in cloth and clay,
(He is born) — tonight, today!
Angels —
(We hear them calling)
Over Bethlehem —
(We hear them calling)
The highest heaven —
(Bows down to a stable)
And every knee that ever bent
Will praise the Child that heaven sent!
Sing, O heavens, sing it loud —
(Glory, glory!)
Break the silence — wake the crowd —
(Glory, glory!)
Love came down in cloth and clay,
(He is born) — tonight, today!
Sing, O heavens, sing it low,
The light has come, and now we know.
A small light breaks the dark tonight...
He is here.
Mmm... a candle in the wide dark sky
Mmm... we left our home, we waved goodbye
Three of us, and one long road
The desert held its breath, gone cold
We read a sign no man had read
A small white fire that moved ahead
Sand on my hands, dust in my hair
We walk because the light is there
No map, no guide, no certain ground
Just one lone star without a sound
It pulls us on, it will not slow
Toward a door we do not know
Follow the light, follow the light
Over the dunes through the velvet night
Mile after mile, we will not turn
To find the reason that we burn
Follow the light, follow the light
It knows the way, we'll be all right
Down to a town too small to see
Where heaven learns to breathe
We carry gifts for someone small
And bitter myrrh inside a shawl
A smoke of prayer, a coin of gold
For tiny hands against the cold
The camels sleep, the watchfires fade
And still that fire is unafraid
The kings forgot their crowns tonight
We are just shadows chasing light
It pulls us on, it will not slow
Toward a door we do not know
Follow the light, follow the light
Over the dunes through the velvet night
Mile after mile, we will not turn
To find the reason that we burn
Follow the light, follow the light
It knows the way, we'll be all right
Down to a town too small to see
Where heaven learns to breathe
Where does it lead? —
(To a manger low)
Why does it shine? —
(So the lost will know)
And there it stops above the hay
No palace gate, no grand display
Just breath and straw and mother's eyes
And all our gold's a hollow prize
Follow the light... follow the light...
We found the morning in the night
Mm... no gold in my hands tonight,
Only breath, only this small light.
The wise men carried treasure from the east,
I carry nothing but a faint heartbeat.
No frankincense, no crown, no shining ring,
Just two cold hands and all I have to bring.
Oh, all I have to bring.
So I knelt down on the straw and the cold,
Where the lamplight turns the shadows to gold,
And I whispered to the manger so low —
I've got no gold, I've got no song that's worthy of a King,
But here's my heart, my breaking heart, it's all I have to bring.
(All I have, all I have)
Take the little that I am, take the broken state I'm in,
Lay me down beside the lamb — it's all I have to bring.
His mother's hands had nothing made of pearl,
Just love enough to hold the whole wide world.
And the shepherds came with rough and working palms,
And found their empty hands became a psalm.
So I'll give the only thing that is mine,
This cracked and quiet heart, this humble shrine,
And I'll lay it where the holy child lies low —
I've got no gold, I've got no song that's worthy of a King,
But here's my heart, my breaking heart, it's all I have to bring.
(All I have, all I have)
Take the little that I am, take the broken state I'm in,
Lay me down beside the lamb — it's all I have to bring.
What will you bring? —
(A trembling heart)
What will you bring? —
(These empty hands)
And it's enough... oh, it's enough for Him.
Ahh —
No gold, no crown, no fine and shining thing,
Just love, just breath, just all I have to bring.
All I have... to bring.
Hush... the world is sleeping...
Only us awake tonight...
Straw beneath your shoulders,
A manger for a throne,
I count each little breath you take,
The softest sound I've known.
The night blows cold and bare outside,
But here my arms are warm —
Sleep now, little dreamer,
I'll keep you from the storm.
No crown but candlelight,
No guard but mother's arms,
All of heaven, folded small,
Asleep and safe from harm.
Hush, little King,
Close your eyes on the hay,
The star is keeping watch
Till the dark turns to day.
Hush, little King,
Let the whole wide world wait —
For now you're only mine to rock,
And the silence keeps us safe.
Your fingers curl like petals
Round the edge of my thumb,
And somewhere shepherds whisper
Of the wonders yet to come.
But morning comes with questions,
And morning bears a cross —
So rest before the world arrives
To weigh what love will cost.
Breathe...
I'll breathe with you,
Slow as falling snow,
Soft as silk and dew —
Every hush a hymn
No one else can hear,
Just a mother and her miracle
And the morning drawing near.
Ooh...
Hush, little King,
Close your eyes on the hay,
The star is keeping watch
Till the dark turns to day.
Hush, little King...
The star is keeping watch...
Sleep now...
Sleep.
Mmm... mmm...
Hmm... they laid Him in the hay
A flicker in the cold
And no one in that room could know
The story He would hold
Look how small the hands that hold tomorrow
Look how soft the breath against the night
But I have felt a thunder in His quiet
I have seen a kingdom in His eyes
And the night drew close as if to listen
And His mother held each wonder, kept it near
Something rising, something soft beginning
A whisper that the world was meant to hear
Oh, I know what this Child will be
He's the mercy, He's the morning we will see
He will carry every name into the light
He'll be hope for the broken, peace for the night
What this Child will be, oh, what this Child will be
They will say He had no crown, no city
Only straw beneath, a borrowed floor
But the poor will call Him friend, the lost will find Him
And the ones who had nothing will have more
And the shepherds left their fields to follow
And the star bent low to mark the place
Something rising where the night was hollow
A promise written soft across His face
Oh, I know what this Child will be
He's the water that will turn to richer wine
He will gather every wanderer back home
He'll be light for the doubting, bread for the line
What this Child will be, oh, what this Child will be
He'll be healing —
(Healing)
He'll be glory —
(Glory)
He'll be the answer when the asking is done
He'll be ours —
(Be ours)
He'll be holy —
(Holy)
The dark could not win, here breaks the new sun
Oh, I know what this Child will be
He's the mercy, He's the morning we will see
He will carry every name into the light
He'll be hope for the broken, peace for the night
What this Child will be
Sleep now, little thunder
The world will learn your name
What this Child will be...
Will never be the same
Hmm... will never be the same
Wake up, wake up, the night is bright
Somebody's born, it's gonna be alright
Run down the road with your shoes untied
Past every window thrown open wide
A baby in the hay where the cold should be
And the whole tired town remembers to breathe
So lift your hands if your heart is full
Stamp your feet on the frozen ground
Heaven leaned down and it touched the dust
Now there's nothing to do but turn the joy up loud
Joy be loud, joy be loud
Sing it over every roof in town
He is here, He is here
Let the cold of the winter melt right down
Clap your hands, make a joyful sound
Hallelujah, won't you turn it up now
Joy be loud, joy be loud
Glory came and turned the dark around
Tell it to the shepherds out on the hill
Tell it to the old man who can't sit still
A star found a stable, a King found the straw
And the smallest little hands hold the hope of us all
If your heart is full
(Lift your hands)
On the frozen ground
(Stamp your feet)
All the way down low
(Heaven leaned)
Now there's nothing to do but turn the joy up loud
Joy be loud, joy be loud
Sing it over every roof in town
He is here, He is here
Let the cold of the winter melt right down
Clap your hands, make a joyful sound
Hallelujah, won't you turn it up now
Joy be loud, joy be loud
Glory came and turned the dark around
No room in the inn, but there's room in me
No silver, no gold, but a melody
Pass it down the pew, pass it hand to hand
Till the last cold heart in the room can stand
Oh, oh-oh
Joy be loud, joy be loud
Sing it over every roof in town
He is here, He is here
Let the cold of the winter melt right down
Clap your hands, make a joyful sound
Hallelujah, won't you turn it up now
Joy be loud, joy be loud
Glory came and turned the dark around
Wake up, wake up, the night is bright
Somebody's born... it's gonna be alright
Set the candle down... let it burn low,
The night has done its holy work, and now we go.
The straw is settled, the small one sleeps,
His mother holds the quiet that the stable keeps.
Outside the cold has lost its bite,
A thread of gold is climbing up the edge of night.
So before you find the road,
Before the dark can weigh you down,
Take the warmth of this small room,
Wear it like a borrowed crown.
Peace go with you, peace go with you,
Out through the door and under every star.
Peace go with you, peace go with you,
The Child is born — you're not alone, you're not alone.
No trumpet sends you down the lane,
Just breath on glass and one bright window in the rain.
Whatever weight you carried in,
Set it by the cradle now and start again.
Before you find the road,
Before the morning calls your name,
Hold the hush of holy ground,
Let the candle's last small flame —
Peace go with you, peace go with you,
Out through the door and under every star.
Peace go with you, peace go with you,
The Child is born — you're not alone, you're not alone.
Go where it's warm,
(Go in peace)
Go through the storm,
(Go in peace)
The light will keep,
(Go in peace)
Hush now, the world's asleep.
Peace... go with you,
Peace... go with you.
A thousand winters we have waited in the cold...
Our fathers told their children of a name to come,
Passed down like a candle, hand to weary hand.
Through a thousand winters the small light carried on,
A word the prophets buried like a seed in frozen land.
So we kept the watch by night,
Counting stars for any sign,
Holding to the words they gave —
That this dark was never ours to keep.
After a thousand winters,
The promise is born tonight.
All the years of waiting
Folding into one small light.
Every prayer our fathers prayed,
Every word the prophets gave,
Is breathing in a manger now —
The promise, alive, awake.
We walked so long in shadow we forgot the dawn,
But someone kept the story when the rest let go.
Now the night is thinning and the stars are drawn
Toward a quiet doorway where the first cries grow.
And we kept the watch by night,
Counting stars for any sign —
Look, the morning we were promised
Is the breath inside this child.
After a thousand winters,
The promise is born tonight.
All the years of waiting
Folding into one small light.
Every prayer our fathers prayed,
Every word the prophets gave,
Is breathing in a manger now —
The promise, alive, awake.
Rise up now, you weary ground,
The One you longed for has come down.
No more counting empty years —
The morning that you waited for is here.
A thousand winters...
And tonight, the spring begins.
Mmm... by lamplight, by lamplight
Mmm... a quiet man
By lamplight I am working, soft shavings on the floor
These hands have shaped good doorframes, but never built before
A cradle for a baby that I cannot call my own
And still I'll stand beside Him, He will never be alone
I am a quiet man, I let my silence speak
The Lord did not choose strong men, He leaned upon the meek
These are Joseph's hands, calloused, plain and worn
They will hold the holy child the night that He is born
I cannot give Him kingdoms, I cannot give Him gold
But these are Joseph's hands, and they will keep Him from the cold
Keep Him from the cold
There were nights, I'll be honest, I lay awake in doubt
I could not understand the things that Mary spoke about
But a voice came in a dream and told me not to fear:
Take her as your wife, it said, and hold your family near
So I'll teach Him how to measure, how to cut a line that's true
How to take a piece of timber, make it sturdy, make it new
And when the weight of all the world is heavy, hard to bear
He'll know His father's working hands were always, always there
These are Joseph's hands, calloused, plain and worn
They will hold the holy child the night that He is born
I cannot give Him kingdoms, I cannot give Him gold
But these are Joseph's hands, and they will keep Him from the cold
These are Joseph's hands...
Plain and worn, plain and worn
I'll keep you from the cold, little one
I'll keep you warm
A knock... a winter knock... so long ago...
They came so late, my rooms were full,
A tired man, his waiting wife.
The wind was sharp, the night was cruel,
I never guessed I held a life.
I saw the snow upon her hair,
I saw how far they both had come.
I had a lamp, a fire, a chair —
And still I told them there was none.
I pointed to the courtyard floor:
"There's only straw, there is no more" —
And turned the key, and shut the door.
The door I closed, I closed too soon.
I never saw beneath the moon
The King who slept on borrowed hay.
I closed the door and walked away.
I heard a cry beyond the wall,
A newborn voice, so small, so clear.
I said it was nothing at all,
And pulled the blanket to my ear.
How many doors have I since barred?
How many strangers have I turned?
I count the nights my heart grew hard
While someone in the cold has yearned.
What kind of man turns mercy back,
And calls a stranger undeserving?
The door I closed, I closed too soon.
I never saw beneath the moon
The King who slept on borrowed hay.
I closed the door and walked away.
But mercy does not lock the door —
The One I turned still knows my name.
I kneel upon the stable floor
And ask the Child to come again.
Come again... come in... come in.
Come in.
Mm... breathe slow, little one...
In the warm of the straw...
No room in the city, so they laid You down low,
Where the oxen are breathing and the lamplight burns slow.
The cattle shift gently, the night air is thin,
And the cold finds the cracks where the wind wanders in.
I can see every breath turn to silver and climb,
Soft as smoke from the manger, keeping warm for a time.
This is the breath of the stable,
The warmth of the lowest of rooms.
Heaven came down to a manger,
A King in the straw and the gloom.
And the animals keep You,
Their slow steady breathing holds back the cold —
The poorest of cradles
Is holding the richest of gold.
She wrapped You in linen and folded Your hands,
Laid You down in the feedbox on a handful of strands.
Her fingers were trembling, her face full of light,
As she rocked the whole world in her arms through the night.
The One who hung stars in the dark
Now small enough to hold —
The King of the heavens is sleeping
Where the night is so cold.
No palace, no purple, no throne,
Just the hay and the breath of the byre,
And a love that came down to the dust
To be born, to be one of us here.
This is the breath of the stable,
The warmth of the lowest of rooms.
Heaven came down to a manger,
A King in the straw and the gloom.
Breathe slow, little King, breathe slow,
The stable is warm, the straw holds You low.
Mm... breath of the stable... breathe slow...
Three travelers, one star,
Three gifts in our hands from afar.
The first gift is gold, cold and bright in my hand,
Heavy as a promise no servant understands.
A crown should be waiting, a palace, a throne —
But the King we have found sleeps on borrowed straw alone.
So I lay the metal down where the cattle have lain,
And the gold looks like nothing by that small sleeping frame.
Gold, smoke and myrrh —
A king, a God, a wound still to come;
We kneel in the straw
And lay down all we are.
Gold, smoke and myrrh.
The second is incense; I set it aflame,
And the smoke lifts a prayer in His unspoken name.
For a child this is worship, the awe we can't say —
That the God of all heaven would come down this way.
So the scent of the holy fills up the thin cold air,
And we name Him our God with the breath of a prayer.
Gold, smoke and myrrh —
A king, a God, a wound still to come;
We kneel in the straw
And lay down all we are.
Gold, smoke and myrrh.
The last gift is bitter — it's myrrh for the dead,
Sweet oil for the body when the last prayer is said.
Why bring it to a cradle? And something in me knew:
The love that was born here was born to see it through.
Gold, smoke and myrrh —
A king, a God, a wound still to come;
We kneel in the straw
And lay down all we are.
Gold, smoke and myrrh.
A king, a God, a wound still to come...
We lay down all we are.
Gold, smoke and myrrh.
Morning light on the temple floor,
I have waited here for years, and more.
They told me, old man, you will not die
Until your eyes have seen the Lord draw nigh.
So I came each dawn to the holy place,
Trusting the promise, longing for His face.
Then through the doors a young mother came,
A baby in her arms — no throne, no name —
Yet something in me knew, and my old knees gave way.
Now let Your servant go in peace,
For these tired eyes have seen.
The promise kept, the long wait done —
I have held salvation, I have held the One.
I lifted Him, so small against my chest,
And felt His warmth put all my fears to rest.
I am not afraid of the closing night —
I have seen the morning, I have held the Light.
A light to the nations, far beyond this room,
Glory for His people, dawn against the gloom.
I can lay me down now, I can close my eyes —
Now let Your servant go in peace,
For these tired eyes have seen.
The promise kept, the long wait done —
I have held salvation, I have held the One.
Now let Your servant go in peace...
In peace... in peace.
Hush — can you hear it? Heaven came down low,
To give us a name for the God we longed to know.
They wrote it down centuries before the night,
A promise of a child who would carry the light.
And under one star, in a stable lined with hay,
The Word that we waited for was finally born today.
So they called Him Emmanuel — and that is what it means:
God is no longer distant, God is here, in between
The cradle and the cattle, the lowly and the poor.
He did not send a message — He walked right through the door.
Emmanuel — God with us, God with us tonight!
Not a king on a far-off throne, but a baby in the light.
We are not alone anymore, we are not on our own —
Emmanuel has come, and He has made our hearts His home.
His mother counted fingers, ten small and brand new,
The hands that hung the heavens were learning what hands do.
The shepherds all came running, breathless through the cold,
To kneel beside the wonder that the angels had foretold.
Emmanuel — God with us, God with us tonight!
Not a king on a far-off throne, but a baby in the light.
We are not alone anymore, we are not on our own —
Emmanuel has come, and He has made our hearts His home.
With us in the daylight —
(He is with us!)
With us through the night —
(He is with us!)
With us when we're weeping —
(He is with us!)
With us in delight —
(He is with us!)
He will hold us through it all.
Emmanuel — God with us, God with us tonight!
Not a king on a far-off throne, but a baby in the light.
We are not alone anymore, we are not on our own —
Emmanuel has come, and He has made our hearts His home!
God with us... God with us...
Emmanuel, You are with us now.
