Tears to Gold e un album soulful blues-rock construit in jurul unei idei vechi — aceea de a preface durerea in ceva luminos cantand-o.

The night undid her shawl of stars
And laid one, trembling, on your sleeve;
I did not speak — I barely breathed —
Some warmth the dark will not believe.
A small light woke beneath the ash,
Too shy to call itself a flame;
Yet in its hush I learned by heart
The slow, the still-unspoken name.
And oh, how quietly it came —
No thunder and no breaking rain,
Just one warm coal the night forgot
To ever let go cold again.
This is a slow burn, love,
An ember under stars;
The fall becomes a light
In these unhurried hours.
Don't blow upon it yet —
Let the dark keep what it earns;
The truest fires of all
Are the ones that learn to burn.
The lake held both our shadows still
And rocked them like a lullaby;
The reeds leaned close to overhear
The word I could not breathe — goodbye.
The moon walked barefoot on the wave
And left no print upon the cold,
And still some tender, patient thing
Was turning all my tears to gold.
And oh, how quietly it stays —
It asks for neither name nor vow,
Just one warm hand against the night,
Just here — just now.
This is a slow burn, love,
An ember under stars;
The fall becomes a light
In these unhurried hours.
Don't blow upon it yet —
Let the dark keep what it earns;
The truest fires of all
Are the ones that learn to burn.
If you must leave before the dawn,
Leave me the coal and not the cold;
For I would rather ache by you
Than warm my hands on someone's gold.
The stars burn slow — that's how they last —
A thousand years to cross the dark;
So take your time, take all of mine,
And tend — and tend — the spark.
This is a slow burn, love,
An ember under stars;
The fall becomes a light
In these unhurried hours.
Don't blow upon it yet —
Let the dark keep what it earns;
The truest fires of all
Are the ones that learn to burn.
The truest fires of all...
Learn to burn.
The lamp burns low, the night leans on the pane,
The sea outside is breathing slow and dark;
I found your hand the way the falling rain
Finds the still water — and it left its mark.
No moon to name us, no star to keep the score —
Just your breath drawing near, and the want of more...
You are honey in the dark, love,
Slow and warm against my skin;
The night dissolves, the hour grows soft,
And I let the sweetness in.
Stay a whisper from my mouth, love,
Let the candle burn down low —
You are honey in the dark, and oh,
I never want the dawn to know.
Your name is a small flame I cup and hold;
It trembles when you turn and say my own.
The cold of all my years begins to fold
Like water folding warm around a stone.
No clock to wake us, no morning at the door —
Just your heart through the dark, and the want of more...
If this is dream, then let me never rise;
If this is dark, then darkness is my light.
I read the whole of heaven in your eyes
And close them — keep that heaven for the night.
You are honey in the dark, love,
Slow and warm against my skin;
The night dissolves, the hour grows soft,
And I let the sweetness in.
Stay a whisper from my mouth, love,
Let the last star burn down low —
You are honey in the dark, and oh,
I never want the dawn to know.
Stay... a whisper from my mouth, love...
Honey in the dark...
The evening pours a slower light,
Warm honey down the hill;
It finds the corner of your smile
And stays a moment, still.
The lake holds one long thread of flame,
The reeds forget to sway—
The whole world stops to look at you
Before it slips away.
And I, who begged the distant stars
For one warm name to keep—
I have it now: the gold hour, love,
Your eyes the gentlest blue;
The daylight kneels to crown your hair,
And I kneel down with you.
We're made of leaving light, my own,
Too bright a thing to hold—
So stay, oh stay, the hour is ours
That turns our tears to gold.
The swallows write their slow goodbye
In circles on the rose;
A candle wakes behind the glass
The way a longing grows.
I'd trade the whole forgetting night,
Its moon, its drifting deep,
For this one hour where you are mine,
And ours the light to keep.
No gold can ever hold its breath,
No dusk was ever long—
But love that knows it cannot stay
Becomes its sweetest song.
So here it is: the gold hour, love,
Your eyes the gentlest blue;
The daylight kneels to crown your hair,
And I kneel down with you.
We're made of leaving light, my own,
Too dear a thing to hold—
Oh stay, my love, the hour is ours
That turns our tears to gold.
Stay... the light is on your face...
Gold... before the cold.
There are things I could not tell you with my tongue,
So I let the evening string them, one by one;
When the word stuck in my throat and would not come,
The six strings said the thing that I'd become.
For love outran my language long ago,
The heart knows more than any mouth can show.
So here's a sigh on six strings, love,
The truth I couldn't say;
Let the guitar carry it,
The words got in the way.
A bend, a blue note breaking,
A hush where I should speak,
The song says I adore you
When my voice is far too weak.
You read me like the moon reads on the tide,
You heard the things I folded up inside;
And when I had no candle and no name,
You warmed your hands against my quiet flame.
For love outgrew my language long ago,
The string knows how to tremble, even so.
If ever I go silent in the dark,
Don't think the fire's gone out, it's just the spark
That learned to speak in something more than air,
In six warm strings, and the sigh I left you there.
So here's a sigh on six strings, love,
The truth I couldn't say;
Let the guitar carry it,
The words got in the way.
A bend, a blue note breaking,
A hush where I should speak,
The song says I adore you
When my voice is far too weak.
The words got in the way...
So the guitar says it now.
The lamp burns low, the window weeps,
A hush of autumn in the eaves;
The warmth you left no longer keeps,
And something turned among the leaves.
I did not hear the season turn —
A star drew back, the dark returned.
Rain on the vine, rain on the vine,
The first soft ache that I call mine;
A leaf lets go, the gold turns grey,
And the rain on the vine still learns your name.
You spoke of seas we'd never cross,
Of distant names the tide won't spell;
And softly, with no word of loss,
I felt the year's first cold farewell.
The lake lies still, the reeds grow old;
Your hand once near has gone to cold.
Rain on the vine, rain on the vine,
The first slow grief that I call mine;
A leaf lets go, the gold turns grey,
And the rain on the vine still learns your name.
Stay — though the candle gutters thin,
Stay while the gathering dark comes in;
Let me hold the dimming light,
One summer folded into night.
Rain on the vine, rain on the vine,
The tender wound where you were mine;
The leaves come down, the gold turns clay,
And the rain on the vine still keeps your name.
Still keeps your name...
Rain on the vine...
I carry your name like a candle through night,
A small, trembling gold held against all the dark;
It burns to my hand, yet I will not let go —
Each tear that it costs me still leaves its bright mark.
And see how the moon lets it break on the sea,
And still it calls loving that silver unrest —
The fall becomes light, and the light pulls from me
Half-broken, half-blessed,
I am torn into light by the weight in my chest;
To love you is winter and dawn in one breath —
I am half of me ruined, and all of me blessed.
Two stars never touch, yet they ache to be near,
Each burning the distance it never will cross;
So I, in your absence, burn brighter, my dear —
To find you was light, and the finding, the loss.
And see how the night holds the lake to its breast,
And still it calls loving this luminous ache —
The fall becomes light, and I rise as I rest
Half-broken, half-blessed,
I am torn into light by the weight in my chest;
To love you is winter and dawn in one breath —
I am half of me ruined, and all of me blessed.
If sorrow's the shadow that tenderness throws,
Then bless me with shadow, I'll stand in your sun;
For nothing worth keeping was ever kept whole —
The heart that stays open is two and is one.
Half-broken, half-blessed,
I am torn into light by the weight in my chest;
To love you is winter and dawn in one breath —
I am half of me ruined, and all of me blessed.
Half-broken... half-blessed...
The candle still burning, the dark not yet done.
The candle keeps the hours it cannot hold,
The window fills with stars grown faint and old;
Your breath still warms the dark against my own,
And still I feel us going down alone.
No storm undid us, love — no thunder, no —
Just hour by hour the tender embers go...
And loving you was the long way down,
A slow descent through a sleeping town,
The lake grows still, the moon lets go —
Oh, hold my hand on the long way down.
I keep your name beneath my tongue like wine,
A warmth that aches the more it fades from mine;
The forest dreams, the river dreams of rain,
And we who dreamed must learn the dark again.
No bitter word, no door we slammed in two —
Just two slow shadows learning how to lose.
So tired, my love, so tender and so tired —
Two candles guttering that once were fire;
If we must fall, then let us fall like light,
The way the evening folds into the night.
For loving you was the long way down,
Through every street where we used to drown
In gold and dusk — now soft, now slow —
Oh, kiss me once on the long way down.
Down... the long way down...
To where the still lake keeps the moon aglow.
Midnight, and no star tonight,
The sky has closed its tired eyes;
I keep your name beneath my tongue
Like one last candle, low and shy.
The lake lies black and holds no moon,
No silver road for you to come;
I begged the dark to bring you near,
The dark grew deeper, and I grew numb.
And the forest does not whisper now,
The wind forgot the way we'd lean;
All I hold is this hollow hour
And the warm, worn place where you have been.
Midnight, no stars, and you are gone,
The night has nothing left of you to give;
I am the candle no hand carries on,
Oh love, teach me again how to live.
I used to read you in the stars,
Now there's no sky to read at all;
Just my own breath against the glass,
And the slow, soft hour of nightfall.
But somewhere under all this black
A morning waits it cannot show;
So let me weep until it cracks,
Even tears can learn to glow.
Midnight, no stars, and you are gone,
Yet I will hold this dark until it's day;
I am the candle still, though small, though worn,
Oh love, the night will end... please stay, please stay.
No stars tonight...
But I am still here,
Still here,
Still... burning low.
You lay your hand upon the door,
The night leans cold against the pane.
I learned your name like the evening star —
Now I must learn the dark again.
The candle keeps a smaller flame,
The sea lies far and low and grey.
I hold each word we ever made
Like water cupped that slips away.
And no, I would not keep you here
Against the tide, against the sky —
I only never knew how near,
How heavy hangs the weight of goodbye.
This is the weight of goodbye,
Soft as the moon, it bows me low.
I love you still — and that is why
The leaving takes me all I know.
Grief that keeps its tender eyes,
I let you go, and loving, let you go.
You were the forest in my sleep,
The lake that held the trembling light.
Now every dream I cannot keep
Walks out with you into the night.
If love could be a lighter thing,
I'd carry it without this ache —
But tenderness is what I bring,
And tenderness is what will break.
So let me bear it, slow and true,
Each falling step a quiet vow:
I would not lose the love of you
To spare the weight I'm holding now.
This is the weight of goodbye,
Warm as your hand the hour you go.
I love you still — and that is why
I bear it as a grace, and let it show.
Tears that turn to gold and rise,
I let you go, my love, and let you go.
Goodbye... I love you still...
The fall becomes the light.
The fire's burned to ashes in the night,
But you came back and knelt beside the cold;
You breathed so soft you coaxed a little light,
And found the one red ember it could hold.
And oh, I thought that love had burned away,
But here you are, still warm, and here I stay...
So from the ashes, from the embers,
Let me love you back to flame;
What the grief forgot to murder,
Your warm hands have called by name.
Blow soft, my love, on what is left,
Don't let the last coal go,
For the ashes hold the embers,
And the embers hold us both, I know.
I buried us in silver, deep and far,
I gave the sea the salt of every tear;
But love's a stubborn, slow, surviving star,
And yours kept burning, patient, year by year.
And I am done with mourning what's not gone,
When all this time your ember carried on...
So from the ashes, from the embers,
Let me love you back to flame;
What the grief forgot to murder,
Your warm hands have called by name.
Blow soft, my love, on what is left,
Don't let the last coal go,
For the ashes hold the embers,
And the embers hold us both, I know.
Rake me over, find the living red,
The gold still burning where the grief had bled;
Not everything the darkness took is gone,
Your love's the night's quiet way of holding on.
The ashes hold the embers...
And the embers hold us both.
The candle that I kept for you
Burned down to one thin thread of blue;
The stars step back, the night grows thin,
And somewhere soft the dawn leans in.
I held your name beneath the moon's long cold —
Now the hush of morning loosens my hold...
And the night is turning,
Turning slow to gold;
The grief that I've been learning
Lets go of what it holds.
What I could not carry
I have laid along the shore —
And the grey begins to marry
The light I waited for.
The sea that wept against the stone
Lays down its silver, leaves me grown;
A slow bird wakes the listening trees,
And morning turns its quiet keys.
I will not lose you — I will learn
To let the candle and the long years return...
Where the dark river finally meets the light,
I set you down as gently as the night;
I kept the cold so long, so deep —
Now I keep the dawn, the dawn is mine to keep.
And the night is turning,
Turning slow to gold;
The ache that I've been learning
Unclenches from my soul.
What the dark had taken
The morning gives me more —
And I rise here, not forsaken,
On this first and tender shore.
Turning... turning...
The long night into gold...
The night has worn its black so long,
I learned its every weary star;
I gave each one a fallen song
And asked them where the mornings are.
But low across the silver lake
A thread of rose begins to climb,
And something in my breast awakes
That sorrow could not still in time.
The candle that I let grow cold
Relights without a hand;
The dark gives back the day it stole,
And I begin to understand.
Comes the morning, comes the light,
Soft as mercy on the sea;
All the tears I cried tonight
Turn to gold and fall from me.
Comes the morning, gentle, slow,
Laying warmth across my brow —
I have wept the dark I know,
I am learning gladness now.
The forest lifts its dripping green,
The moon goes pale and slips away;
The lover's name I held unseen
Is easier to speak by day.
What grief had carved into my hands
The sun fills slowly, line by line,
Till even loss becomes the lands
Where some new tenderness can shine.
I thought the night had taken all,
That nothing soft remained —
But here, behind the eastern wall,
The light has learned my name.
Comes the morning, comes the light,
Soft as mercy on the sea;
All the tears I cried tonight
Turn to gold and fall from me.
Comes the morning, gentle, slow,
Laying warmth across my brow —
I have wept the dark I know,
I am learning gladness now.
Thank you for the bitter hours,
Thank you for the rain;
The same grey sky that drowned the flowers
Gave them back again.
Not because the night was kind —
But morning always comes,
And finds the trembling, half-blind heart
And gently calls it home.
Comes the morning, comes the light,
The lake on fire, tender, gold;
Everything I lost to night
The warm new day has come to hold.
Comes the morning — oh, I rise,
Soft and grateful, washed and whole;
Gladness pooling in my eyes,
The dawn has found my weary soul.
Comes the morning... I am here.
Comes the morning... and the light is near.
The light leans low through the window again
I trace your name on the glass and the rain
Everything tender must learn how to fall
But look how it shines on the way
And the low note aches, and the high note glows
Somewhere between is the whole of it all
This is where the fall becomes light
Where the tear and the smile are the same
I'm breaking and blooming tonight
And the love that I lost knows my name
Oh, where the fall becomes light
You gave me the summer, I gave you the cold
We burned slow and golden, we never grew old
And all that I grieve I still carry like song
So the years cannot take it away
So lower me down, let me rise
Let the ache turn to gold in my eyes
Nothing is lost that once learned how to glow
It was always just light on the way
This is where the fall becomes light
Where the tear and the smile are the same
I'm breaking and blooming tonight
And the love that I lost knows my name
Oh, where the fall becomes light
I gave the night my weeping, and the night returned the moon —
A silver coin of patience for a heart that broke too soon.
I thought the salt would scar me, that the dark would keep its hold,
But morning came like mercy and it turned the tears to gold.
The lake still holds your shadow where the willows lean to drink,
The candle learned your whispered name along the water's brink.
Each grief I would not bury, every ache I could not fold,
Your quiet singing raised it till the sorrow shone like gold.
And here is all I know, love, sung simple, sung and plain —
No tenderness runs deeper than the kind that's born of pain.
So let the rivers carry what the years could never sell —
The loved, the sung, the broken find the light they were foretold.
The fall becomes the flowering, the wound becomes the bell,
And everything you grieve for, love will turn it into gold.
I do not fear the evening now, nor stars that drift and roam,
For every star's a traveller who has finally come home.
The dark was not my ending — it was earth around the seed;
The tears were only sleeping till your light was all I'd need.
Hold the smallest sorrow gently, let it ripen, let it stay,
For nothing true is ever lost and no love given away.
What the river took in silver it returns to us in gold —
The long, the late, the aching, into something we can hold.
So let the rivers carry what the years could never sell —
The loved, the sung, the broken find the light they were foretold.
The fall becomes the flowering, the wound becomes the bell,
And everything you grieve for, love will turn it into gold.
Turn it, turn it into gold...
The tears, the tender tears, to gold.
Now that the weeping's over and the song is nearly through,
I find I am not empty, I am full of having you;
The candle's burned to morning and the dark has lost its hold,
And all the nights I cried in have come back to me as gold.
This is the quiet after, not the absence, but the glow,
The warmth a fire leaves a room long after embers go.
So let me sit here in the afterglow,
The love still warm where you used to be;
Nothing is taken that the heart can know,
You left your light all over me.
Afterglow, afterglow,
The gentle gold of letting go.
I hear that first slow ember in the strings come round again,
The song that lit the darkness back when there was only pain;
And oh, it sounds like mercy now, it sounds like coming home,
The slow burn finally resting in the warmth it's always known.
I will not ask the morning to give the darkness back,
Nor trade this tender daylight for the fire that I lack;
What burned has done its burning, what wept has learned to shine,
And the afterglow of loving you is mine, is mine, is mine.
So let me rest here in the afterglow,
The love still warm where you used to be;
Nothing is taken that the heart can know,
You left your light all over me.
Afterglow, afterglow,
The gentle gold of letting go.
You left your light all over me...
Afterglow.
The candle keeps a little sea of light,
The sea still keeps each star it ever drowned;
And you keep me the way the falling night
Keeps one last colour where the sun goes down.
I counted every grief I couldn't hold,
Small coins of morning, gathered one by one;
I never knew that sorrow, growing old,
Would learn to shine, and answer to the sun.
So let it ache, the half-step where we part,
The blue note trembling on the edge of day;
Grief is a goldsmith, hammering my heart,
Till even darkness softens into day.
Bring me your tears, I'll turn them to gold,
The salt into amber, the ash into flame;
All that you carried, set down, and behold,
I'll turn your tears into gold.
I gave the ocean back its borrowed blue,
I gave the candle back its little sun,
And everything I lost returned as you,
A quiet light, when all the losing's done.
If sorrow is the toll that starlight pays,
Then I am rich with every tear I've known;
So let it climb, the weeping, breaking blaze,
The night refined, the dark to morning grown.
Bring me your tears, I'll turn them to gold,
The salt into amber, the ash into flame;
All that you carried, set down, and behold,
I'll turn your tears into gold.
Sing it home to me, the note that will not break,
And I will sing it back, for every loss we ache;
Till I can't tell the singing from the string,
Till the breath becomes the string, and the string begins to sing.
I can feel the floor begin to rise,
I can feel the heavy turn to wings;
There's a brightness breaking in my eyes,
And oh, the whole horizon sings.
And it's gold, glory, it's gold,
Everything I lost is rolling home as gold;
All that I could not hold
Falls upward, finally free,
Oh, you make a sea of me,
Gold.
Bring me your tears, I'll turn them to gold,
The salt into amber, the ash into flame;
All that you carried, set down, and behold,
Joy is the grief, fully felt, catching flame,
I'll turn your tears into gold.
The candle keeps a little sea of light...
I'll turn your tears...
To gold.
I have no light to call my own,
I am the glass the morning crossed;
A thousand names I've never known
Still warm the rooms where they were lost.
I am the echo, not the cry,
The keeper of a borrowed flame;
Each tear that ever wandered by
I held a while and learned its name.
And maybe that's a lonely art,
To shine with light that isn't mine;
But oh, it warms me through the dark,
The giving is the only shine.
So take it, take this borrowed light,
I never meant to keep it long;
I am the candle, not the night,
I am the singer made of song.
Take it, take this borrowed gold,
It shines the brighter, given free;
The only light I'll ever hold
Is the light I hand to thee.
There is a note I never play,
The low one, where a self would be,
A silence at the bottom of the day,
The hollow bell inside of me.
But you, you looked at me and stayed,
You called the echo by a name;
And something in the dark I made
Remembered it was once a flame.
And here it is, the note I kept,
The one I never let me hold;
Through all the songs, through all I wept,
I saved one warm low note of gold,
And it's yours.
So take it, take this borrowed light,
It was always meant for you;
I am the candle, not the night,
And the night is nearly through.
Borrowed light... borrowed gold...
The only thing I'll ever keep
Is the keeping of your soul.
