Casiopeea

is a UNIQUE project in ROMANIA, born to the desire to promote sport and health by taking concrete action, with direct impact on the society.

We organize the Casiopeea cross races for everyone who wants to spend a nice day jogging or taking a walk outdoor, enjoying the fresh air and wanting to contribute to improving the lives of breast cancer patients.

The cross entry fee goes entirely to purchasing breast prostheses, thereby completing the national care programme for these women.

In addition, we initiate actions to promote a healthy lifestyle in companies and schools, through different programs, designed to adjust the general recommendations of the experts to the specific conditions and needs of the respective group.

With the workshops organized in and outside the hospitals, we stand by the side of patients with severe conditions, to support them in their evolution towards recovering their balance and hope.

The Cause

At the global level, a woman is diagnosed with breast cancer every 19 seconds. In Romania, 8,000 women receive this diagnosis every year, while 75% of them end up on the surgical table, due to tardy detection. There is a story of vulnerability and courage, behind each percentage. Mastectomy is a critical step, followed by a long physical and psychological healing process, at the end of which the patients are the true winners. Still, any hero needs a physical and emotional support system.

Breast prostheses are more than support for the survivors of breast cancer, yet only a few women manage to have access to them. The prostheses and the bra necessary to wear them are on the subsidized list of the National Health Insurance House. However, the procedures to obtain them are cumbersome and the patients have to wait up to two years to receive them. The alternative is to purchase them, but the costs amounting to EUR 150 (accessories included) are too great of an effort for many of the women.

Impact

Besides the aesthetic benefit, external prostheses act on the body and mind, proving to be an important factor in the healing process. At physical level, their purpose is to relieve the unequal pressure on the spine, pressure which results from the mastectomy. At mental level, they are an irreplaceable accessory for the recovery of self-esteem and femininity. The latter are essential for a complete recovery and for returning to the life before the diagnosis.

So far, we have managed to help 2,000 survivors get their breast prostheses, thanks to the Pink Race. Their impact on the quality of life for women suffering from breast cancer is remarkable, for which reason we are committed to carrying on with this initiative. Their stories are full of heart, strength and resolute optimism in the face of life, and we can support them to carry on, with a winner smile on their faces.
